Self-Help

Self Help, Inc. is an organization dedicated to serving those who have few financial resources in Taos, Santa Fe, and Rio Arriba counties as well as in Los Alamos. 1,200-1,500 people a year come to Self Help for services.

Funding for Self Help comes from: United Way of Northern NM, Los Alamos churches, grants, and fund raisers such as the Empty Bowl project, a fund raiser where for the price of admission, attendees are served a soup lunch and also choose a hand-crafted bowl to take home.

  • Self Help operates an emergency fund program whereby immediate short term emergencies are funded; i.e. utility bills to prevent services from being terminated or medicine for a critically ill patient.
  • Self Help provides funding to help people develop cottage industries so as to enhance their ability to support themselves.
  • Self Help acts as an advocate alone or in concert with other social agencies to help families obtain aid through various governmental social aid programs as well as with private funding agencies.
