Lydia Patterson InstituteLydia Patterson Institute was founded in 1913. It is a college preparatory school, grades 9-12, with a special English-as-a second-language program. The school is located five blocks from the international port of entry between El Paso, Texas and Cuidad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. Besides teaching English and a high school education, the institution also trained students for the ministry to serve Mexican-Americans and Mexican immigrants. Throughout the years, the institution has earned the reputation of being the best school where Hispanics are prepared for higher education. Presently, the school serves 480 students. Approximately 70% walk across the border daily. Half of these students are United States citizens that reside in Mexico. The other half may eventually immigrate to the United States or become powerful bilingual resources in Mexico. Lydia Patterson Institute serves predominately low to middle-low income families. Lydia Patterson Institute prepares its students to work with immigrant families throughout the country. Lydia Patterson Institute produces leaders on both sides of the border. The purpose of Lydia Patterson is to provide an education to predominately Hispanics and to prepare them for a good future. Having done this, Lydia Patterson will have freed them from the lines of unemployment, welfare, and poverty and made them into strong contibutors of our society.
