CHAPTER EIGHT Today, after last week's break to hear Rev. Steinsiek, we continue to a "sermonic study" of the Gospel of John. It's my intention to preach and teach us through John's Gospel, with just an occasional interruption, throughout the first half of 2009. John 8:1-11 Forgiving an Adulteress This is "classic" Jesus No one is without sin; no one's sin is unforgivable If only He had left out the final remark! John 8:12-30 More quibbling with the Pharisees Is Jesus speaking alone, or is the Father with Him? Jesus prophesies the Resurrection as His validation John 8:31-47 Children of Abraham or children of the devil? Sin creates bondage - bondage to the devil Jesus is extremely tough on these Jewish leaders Much of this argumentation is tedious; it's the "rabbinic method" John 8:48-59 Jesus claims to be greater than Abraham; equal with God "Pushing the limits" even with those who might like to believe (some) When Jesus says, "I am," it's a stoning offense: blasphemy to the Jews Next week we'll continue on with chapter 9 of John's Gospel. Please read and meditate upon it prior to next Sunday morning.
