"JOHN'S GOSPEL -- CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE"
SUNDAY MORNING, JUNE 28, 2009
PASTOR DAVE RING
LOS ALAMOS 1ST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

We have been, since early January, pursuing a "sermonic study" of the Gospel of John. Today we reach the conclusion thereof, with John's lengthy account of one of Jesus' post-Resurrection appearances.

John 21:1-14 Fishers of fish experience breakfast with the Savior

An earlier miracle is renewed
_______________________________________________________

Peter is overly eager to please
_______________________________________________________

Jesus sticks with mundane matters for a while
_______________________________________________________

John 21:15-19 Peter is reinstated as a disciple

Jesus repeatedly asks a tough question
_______________________________________________________

Peter is "hurt" by Jesus' insistence - but it gets his attention
_____________________________________________________

Jesus prophesies Peter's martyrdom
_______________________________________________________

John 21:20-24 Peter and John are "very human" disciples

Rivalry even in the presence of the Resurrected Lord
_______________________________________________________

John makes oblique reference to his unusually long lifespan
_______________________________________________________

John 21:25 There's more to be said

Jesus did many other important things which are not written down
_______________________________________________________

Thank you for persevering through this six-month sermonic study of the Gospel of John. I suggest that, in the week ahead, you re-read the entire gospel in a single sitting to better experience it as a connected narrative.
